What is AI?

AI tools are not thinking tools, but intelligence augmentation tools. Meaning you start with the problem, not the tech. Or the tool.

Artificial Intelligence, at its heart, is a subset of computer science that seeks to build machines that emulate human intelligence.

In the L&D landscape, the current AI tools and systems shine in content and assessment creation, data analysis, performance tracking, and claiming to “personalise” the learning experience for all individuals.

Here’s a simple way to look at it - AI is not a separate place on the internet—it is the internet.

What types of AI are there?

 

AI-Shape_Narrow

Narrow AI

This type of AI is designed to perform a narrow task (e.g., facial recognition, internet searches, or driving a car). Most current AI systems fall under this category. They operate under a limited pre-defined range or set of contexts.

AI-Shape_General

General AI

A type of AI endowed with broad human-like cognitive capabilities, enabling it to tackle new and unfamiliar tasks autonomously. Such a robust AI framework possesses the capacity to discern, assimilate, and utilise its intelligence to resolve any challenge without needing human guidance.

AI-Shape_Super

Super Intelligent AI

This represents a future form of AI where machines could surpass human intelligence across all fields, including creativity, general wisdom, and problem-solving. Superintelligence is speculative and not yet realised. Yes, this is our Terminator future.

Let's keep it simple – remember don’t start with the tech – start with the problem.

  1. What's the problem?
  2. Does learning play a role in solving the problem? Remember, learning is never the silver bullet.
  3. If learning can play a role in solving the problem, where can AI add the most value? Is it in the design process, the user experience or both?

Most of all…

Technology for learning can't succeed without relevance and motivation in place.

If we forget that learning is about context, not content, we’ll just create vast content libraries full of inaccurate information that no one cares about because it isn’t tied to performance or culture.
